Quick Tire Search Guide

  • The speed rating is a letter indicating the maximum speed a tire can safely maintain over time under its recommended load capacity.

EV Tech Note: Most modern electric vehicles require H, V, W, or Y speed ratings to handle instantaneous acceleration thresholds safely. Lower speed ratings possess softer tread formulations that flex or squirm under heavy torque loads.

    • Q: 160 km/h (99 mph) — Studless dedicated winter tires

    • R: 170 km/h (106 mph) — Heavy-duty light trucks / Commercial vans

    • S: 180 km/h (112 mph) — Standard passenger family sedans

    • T: 190 km/h (118 mph) — Standard entry touring cars & compact SUVs

    • U: 200 km/h (124 mph) — High-performance touring tires

    • H: 210 km/h (130 mph) — Sports sedans / Baseline EV crossover trims

    • V: 240 km/h (149 mph) — High-performance sport packages / Tesla trims

    • W: 270 km/h (168 mph) — Ultra-high-performance (UHP) sports cars & dual-motor variants

    • Y: 300 km/h (186 mph) — Exotic supercars / Track editions (e.g., Model S Plaid / Cyberbeast)

    • (Y): Above 300 km/h (Above 186 mph) — Custom/Bespoke flagship extreme performance racing tires

  • The load index is a numerical code that specifies the maximum weight a single tire can support when inflated to its maximum safe pressure limit.

Tech Note: Always match or exceed the load index specified on your vehicle's driver-side door placard. While lightweight subcompacts can run lower numbers, mid-size crossovers, heavy SUVs, trucks, and modern Electric/Hybrid vehicles require reinforced Extra Load (XL) or High Load (HL) tires with higher load index numbers to handle the gross vehicle weight safely.

    • 97: Max 730 kg (1,609 lbs) — Sports sedans and grand touring setups

    • 98: Max 750 kg (1,653 lbs) — Full-size sedans and entry-level compact crossovers

    • 99: Max 775 kg (1,709 lbs) — Premium luxury sedans and family wagons

  • UTQG ratings are assigned by the individual tire manufacturers based on government-mandated testing guidelines, not by an independent government agency. Therefore, they are most accurate when comparing tires from the same brand rather than comparing across different manufacturers.

    • Treadwear (Relative Longevity Comparison)

      • 100: The baseline reference score. It represents the standard durability of the control tire used during testing.

      • 200 to 400: Standard lifespan. This is the typical range for most standard passenger cars, ultra-high-performance tires, and basic all-season tires.

      • 500 to 800+: High mileage. These tires use harder rubber compounds engineered for maximum longevity, commonly found on touring and long-distance commuter tires.

    • Traction (Wet Straight-Line Braking Performance)

      • AA: Outstanding. The highest possible rating, indicating maximum stopping power on wet asphalt and concrete.

      • A: Excellent. The industry standard for high-quality tires, providing very safe wet-weather braking.

      • B: Average. Acceptable stopping power, though performance is lower than average modern premium tires.

      • C: Minimum. The lowest federally allowed rating for passenger vehicles.

    • Temperature (Heat Dissipation and Speed Capability)

      • A: Superior. The tire effectively dissipates heat and can safely operate at sustained speeds over 115 mph (185 km/h).

      • B: Good. The tire safely handles heat build-up at sustained speeds between 100 mph and 115 mph (160–185 km/h).

      • C: Minimum. Meets the basic federal safety standard, safe for sustained speeds between 85 mph and 100 mph (136–160 km/h).
